Has Rigoletto taken his jesting too far?

Full of melodies that are now the musical backdrop of modern life, Verdi’s Rigoletto is one of the world’s best-loved operas. Jonathan Miller’s production is the godfather of the genre. Set in Little Italy in 1950’s New York, it is a terrific night out: a fast-paced gangster saga of jealousy, love and revenge.

The story of Rigoletto
The title character is a wise-cracking mobster who uses words as weapons. But he shoots his mouth off once too often and a misplaced joke sparks a deadly vendetta. Now the joke’s on Rigoletto as the depraved Duke seduces his daughter, Gilda. Rigoletto vows to avenge her honour and his family name.
English surtitles projected above the stage. Surtitles cannot be seen from row H backwards in Dress Circle or last two rows of Upper Circle. Children under the age of 16 must be seated with an adult/someone over 18. The adult cannot be sitting separately. Latecomers - if you are late, you will be able to view the performance on a TV monitor whilst our staff wait for an appropriate point in the performance to allow you to enter the auditorium and take your seat. Our staff will try to do this as early as they can within the performance but this isn’t always possible and in some cases you may be asked to wait until the interval.
