Superb

Superb performance by the Welsh boys - well worth the ticket fee (which was surprisingly cheap)

Manic Street Preachers at Cardiff Castle , Cardiff Castle, Cardiff - 29th June 2019

From glam rock provocateurs to becoming one of the biggest British bands of the 90s and beyond, the cultural impact of Welsh indie icons Manic Street Preachers cannot be understated.

Formed during the late 80s in Blackwood; the group originally consisted of James Dean Bradfield (guitar, vocals), Sean Moore (drums), Nicky Wire (bass) and Richey Edwards (rhythm guitar). Brash and confrontational, they would both appal and delight the music press, releasing records Generation Terrorists (1992), Gold Against The Soul (1993) and The Holy Bible (1994).

Suffering with mental health issues, Edwards would disappear in 1995 and there has been no concrete evidence to confirm his whereabouts or circumstances.

This prompted a renaissance for the band as Manic Street Preachers released Everything Must Go (1996) which thrust them into the limelight thanks to their working class ode “A Design For Life”. They hit No. 1 with the single “If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next”, an anti-fascist anthem inspired by the Spanish Civil War as featured on This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998).

The 21st century has seen the Manics undergo many incarnations, including spiked political punk on Know Your Enemy (2001), crystalline indie pop with Lifeblood (2004) and currently occupying a post punk and art pop-inspired sound on most recently titles Futurology (2014), Resistance Is Futile (2018) and The Ultra Vivid Lament (2021).
